linksys ADSL Modem / broadband router
How do I Setup my Linksys WAG54G or AG241 ADSL Modem / Router?
Before you undertake this tutorial please ensure that you have the following details to hand:-
Your ADSL username (account name)
Your ADSL password
Your Router username
Your Router password
An understanding of your network configuration
This should only be undertaken by your I.T. Administrator or nominated member of staff.
Step 1
Log on to your router's control panel. Open Internet Explorer and type your router's address into the IE address bar.
Note the default address for the router is 192.168.1.1
Step 2
At the logon box, enter your router username and password.
Step 3
At the router configuration panel, make sure the 'Setup' tab is highlighted.
Set Encapsulation to PPPoA, VPI=0, VCI=38, Multiplexing=VC (diagram section
1)
Enter your ADSL Account username & password (diagram section
2)
Enter your ADSL Account username & password
Disable Local DHCP server (diagram section
3) if you have a Windows Server in your organisation, otherwise leave this feature enabled.
Click the "Save Settings" button at the foot of the page
How do I Setup my Linksys WRT54G Broadband router?
Before you undertake this tutorial please ensure that you have the following details to hand:-
Your Router username
Your Router password
An understanding of your network configuration
This should only be undertaken by your I.T. Administrator or nominated member of staff.
Step 1
Use the
Linksys installation guide to connect together your broadband router, ADSL modem & PC. IMPORTANT Please connect and switch on the devices in the order in which you are instructed.
Once installed, log on to your router's control panel. Open Internet Explorer and type your router's address into the IE address bar.
Note the default address for the router is 192.168.1.1
Step 2
At the logon box, enter your router username and password.
Step 3
At the router configuration panel, make sure the 'Setup' tab is highlighted.
Set 'Internet Connection Type' to Automatic Configuration (DHCP) (diagram section
1)
Disable Local DHCP server (diagram section
2) if you have a Windows Server in your organisation, otherwise leave this feature enabled.
Click the "Save Settings" button at the foot of the page
How do I Restore / Check / Diagnose my internet connection?
Before you undertake this tutorial please ensure that you have the following details to hand:-
Your Router username
Your Router password
This should only be undertaken by your I.T. Administrator or nominated member of staff.
Step 1
If you are having problems receiving e-mail or accessing a specific web site and you believe your internet connection to be at fault, please verify your internet
connection by trying to visit BOTH
www.bbc.co.uk &
www.google.co.uk. If you are unable to see BOTH of these sites continue to Step 2.
If you are able to see at least
one of these sites, your internet connection is working. The problem is probably a transient internet one which is outside of your control.
Step 2
WRT54G Broadband Router Owners : Disconnect both the router and ADSL modem from the power, leave for 30 seconds then reconnect the power in the order specified in the
Linksys installation guide.
WAG54G & AG241 ADSL Router Owners : Log on to your router's control panel. Open Internet Explorer and type your router's address into the IE address bar.
Note the default address for the router is 192.168.1.1
Step 3
At the logon box, enter your router username and password.
Step 4
At the router configuration panel, make sure the 'Status' tab is highlighted.
Check the PPP Login Status. Press the Connect button. If already currently connected, press the disconnect button and wait for the status page to refresh then press the connect button.(diagram section
1).
Check you Internet IP Address. If correctly connected this value should
not be 0.0.0.0. (diagram section
2).
Step 5
If your internet service is still not restored, as a last resort, power down your ADSL Router by either using the rocker switch on the back of the box (v2.0) or by removing the power cord (v1.0). Leave the unit without power for 30 seconds, restore power, wait for 2 minutes before trying again.
How do I Setup my Linksys Router or Modem for Wireless connection?
Before you undertake this tutorial please ensure that you have the following details to hand:-
Your Router username
Your Router password

Step 1
Log on to your router's control panel. Open Internet Explorer and type your router's address into the IE address bar.
Note the default address for the router is 192.168.1.1
Step 2
At the logon box, enter your router username and password.
Step 3
At the router configuration panel, highlight the 'Wireless' tab. Select 'Basic Wireless Settings' from the sub menu.
Set Wireless Network Mode to 'Mixed'.
Enter a name for your network in the 'Wireless Network Name (SSID)' field.
Select a Wireless channel. Channel 12 is default.
Ensure 'Wireless SSID Broadcast' is set to 'Enable'
Click the "Save Settings" button at the foot of the page
Step 4
Select 'Wireless Security' from the sub menu.
Set 'Security Mode' to WEP. Set Encryption to '128 bits'
Enter a Passphrase and click 'Generate'
Make a note of the value in 'Wep Key 1'. This is the key you will need later when setting up your wireless client machines to connect to this network.
Click the "Save Settings" button at the foot of the page
